Is there an easy way to remove an engraving from a brass door knocker?
The door knocker on my front door still has the previous owners' name engraved. I planned to replace it, but when I took out the screws to remove it, it still wouldn't budge. It seems like it is really sealed to the door somehow. Rather than mess with prying it off and messing up the paint/door I am wondering if there is an alternative. Why don't you carefully trace an outline of the engraved area of your door knocker, and transfer it to card stock or even cardboard. Take or mail this tracing to site below and have a brass or metal plate engraved with YOUR name. Make sure they drill holes so you can attatch it on top of old knocker with brass screws. Hope this helps. Sis Ivd | Read more What is the best way to shine a heavy brass door knocker and keep from re-tarnishing? What I have found to work well is: 1. Wash the item well with detergent and warm water. With a door knocker, you will probably have more success if you remove it. 2. Use a good brass polish to clean and shine. This will remove any protective coating, but this is the only way to make it shine. 3. You can protect your shine with a clear coating, but I prefer to use a good car wax like Turtle Wax. Happy shining. reefshark111 | Read more I have a brass door knocker that I have cleaned up with Brasso and it looks like I rubbed off some? sort of coating. It looks great now but do I need to seal it with something to keep it from tarnishing? What will protect it and make the shine last outside in the elements? Give it several very light coats of spray, clear polyurethane (non yellowing) Make sure to give it plenty of time to dry between coats. arizonakal | Read more How do you clean a brass (looks like) door knocker that's tarnished & partially painted over? Not 100% sure if it's brass but it looks like it. 1st, if the paint is latex, hot soapy water and some scrubbing will remove the paint. You may need a stripper but use very little. Then you can use any number of metal cleaners. Many are dip and rinse. I like Tarnex. Good luck. gene j | Read more |
