What type of primer and paint do you use over a laminate covered particle board armoire?
I received this beautifully shaped TV armiore, but I want to paint it gold, then completely black. After it is all black, I want to sand (very lightly) the edges to have some gold show through. I would like to use a fleur de lis stamp on the two doors in gold paint, so that the left and right door that hide the TV have the stamp on them. There is a small embellishment already at the very top in a scroll design that is glued on, so once the whole thing is black, I want to lightly touch that with gold paint too to show up. I just don't know what type of primer to use over laminate and then do I use latex or the awful oil based paint? Is sanding even beneficial over laminate? You have to sand it so the primer will stick.I would use BIN latex primer. Then you can use any latex paint over it.I have used BIN many times with success. vinny | Read more I THINK it's a good idea......? I found an old huge farmhouse with a large next door lot that would make the perfect wedding venue. The house needs a lot of work, but it is doable. My husband (excellent gardener - his passion) and I would live in the top and have room on the lower floor for small weddings (30-40 people), a private garden in the back (would hold 30-40 people), and the lot next door could be fenced (7' white privacy) and have room for a large gazebo and could easily hold 100 for ceremony and reception. I would go kind of french country (not too much, though) with a fleur de lis theme, and supply all linens, tables, chairs, glass tableware, centerpiece options, cake stands and cake, could do catering (I have 3 that I work with a lot) I have a great photographer, can do flowers and would have the ipod ability inside and out. I can serve alcohol, but not sell it, so they would have to bring their own.If you could have your wedding here for 45/person, would you? what else do I need to consider? I should let you know, there is parking 1 1/2 blocks away, and 3 local churches in case of rain (I've already spoken with them). City Council was easy to work with - no restrictions except a 11:00 p.m. noise abatement on Saturday nite. There's also a small vacant house across the street that could be a great honeymoon cottage. outside lighting, I have thought about that a lot. I found black iron lamposts that (they tell me) will illuminate all the areas if they are in the 4 corners of the lot. Don't need lots of space for living. This is a much needed business in this area that my husband and I could run together. He retires in 4 years. also, I'm SICK of brides getting ripped off. Vendors hear "wedding" and automatically jack up the prices. I want a nice place that makes people happy. Oh Tammyj good plan. It has to be re-wired any way - a few more outlets won't be hard. Love in Paris - good thoughts, all. I did research on insurance, not as bad as I thought. Picture a small farming community that was WAY out in boondocks 10 years ago, but the city has and is moving that direction with great access roads being built. The 45.00 includes rental. I know the down side is the parking issue, but there isn't another lot available that is big enough right now. This property is CHEAP right now, but in 4 or 5 years probably won't be. Would love to talk to you more - you make a lot of good points. well the idea sounds great and much of what would be sucess would have to do with the finished product. Your pricing you location, how you would advertise etc. I own a hotel and banquet center it is alot of hard work and you need to factor in that you really won't make money for the first year since most weddings are booked in advance. Then also how much will you be charging for the rental? How long will it take you to recover your investment? Do you have a kitchen area that a cater could use? How much parking is available I personally would not want to book my wedding at a place where my guests have to park 1 1/2 blocks away factoring in elderly guest and the weather. So my suggestion would be for you to look into valet parking companies so that could be an option you could present. Also have you contacted a insurance agent to see what the cost to insure would run you since you will be operating a commerical business at the location. You would not want to just focus on wedding if you are trying to do this to make a profit you need to advertise birthday parties, engagment parites, business meetings, wedding and bridal showers, anniversary parties, etc. You need to look into the cost to advertise and figure will you beable to afford all the expenese such as advertising and insurance, upkeep etc while not turning a profit? The idea is wonderful and think it would be a nice location I'm picturing it in my head but the only thing that confuses me is if it is a farm house how is it located so close to so many things so I don't know if you want to maybe look at a different marking approach as you would think farm house on a farm you know. Just some ideas. Buy your linen you can get it the cheapest on ebay you will make so much more money on the mark up. Let me know what you are planning to charge and I will give you more input if you would like it. Best of luck I have been this for years if you have any questions mellpal@yahoo.com What area are you in state wise. I love old houses and think it would make a wonderful venue. Charging the $45 per person what would be your profit? How much would it take for you to do the remodel? Email me if you want to chat about it And if nothing else I would snap the property up could be a good investment in general. Love in Paris | Read more I want to redecorate my bedroom without completely repainting. Ideas? I want to vamp up my bedroom, but I don't want to completely repaint, mostly because I can't afford all that paint (it's a pretty good sized room) and painting just annoys me haha. I have a damask/fleur de lis theme; the top of the walls are a darker cream color, the bottom is a blue green (more blue, though), and I have a white border with gold detailing between the two colors. My bed set is a tan and white damask pattern on a black rod iron daybed. I have brown carpeting and white woodwork (trim, door, etc). Okay. I LOVE vintage bird/tree and paisley patterns and dusty colors. I'd like to replace the dark blue on my walls and keep the top color, but I'm not sure what color. Suggestions? Ideas on how I can redo my room without going completely overboard? My cheap a** self would like to spend no more than $100, so DIY projects would be amazing also! And I work at Hobby Lobby, so if you're familiar with the store and can suggest items I would love you forever haha :) You'd think from working there I'd have ideas like crazy, but that's not the case! I rested my head against the window, watching the woods whoosh by. I was thinking of the life I’d left behind to move to some backwoods house in Vermont to be homeschooled. Mother made a sharp turn onto a long, but bumpy and unkempt, driveway. “We’re here,” she announced cheerfully. Ahead of us was a large Victorian-style mansion. The grayish paint was peeling and the chimney was sagging. It was probably a pretty house once, but not anymore. It was surrounded by tall trees, probably hundreds of years old. “Isn’t it beautiful?” Mother said, gazing up at it. “It brings back so many memories of my summers here.” My sister Elisabeth replied, “I guess.” “Helena, what do you think?” “It’s okay,” I replied. “Well, we’d better get unpacked,” Mother sighed, visibly disappointed we didn’t share her love for the old house. I took my small suitcase and a light box and waited while Mother unlocked the front door. Inside, it was musty and dark. An ornate chandelier hung from the ceiling, covered in dust, as was everything else. Only a few of the original lights worked on it. The couch was made of dark leather. As I set my suitcase on it, a huge puff of dust flew up. I went upstairs with Elisabeth. There were exactly three bedrooms. “You can choose any one you’d like,” Mother called from downstairs as she opened up a large box. I chose a room with a large window covered with lacy beige curtains. The wallpaper was a faded blue, covered in even lighter blue fleur-de-lis. The bed was small and the headboard had iron-wrought designs on it. Lucky for me, Elisabeth had chosen another room without bothering me about this one. I sat on the bed, and it creaked quite loudly. I didn’t care; I was too tired. I tried to sleep, and soon I succeeded. “Wake up, sleepyhead!” I shook out of my slumber. Elisabeth was standing over me. “Mom fixed dinner.” I loped downstairs to the small dinette. Mother had set up the Formica table and the folding chairs. Elisabeth pulled out the paper plates and plastic utensils from a package and plopped them on the table. Mother brought some bread and peanut butter. “That’s all we have before I go to town tomorrow,” Mother said, sighing. We all sat. “Did I ever tell you about my great aunt Catriona? She owned this house before we did.” “You mentioned her,” I mumbled through a mouthful of sandwich. “I visited this house every summer. I met my first boyfriend here when I was seventeen going on eighteen.” “You had Helena when you were eighteen,” Elisabeth said suspiciously. “Oh, yes.” Mother said, and nodded. “Anyway, back to Aunt Cat and my summers here. I stopped going to her house when I went off to college. But she never forgot me. I think I was the only one who thought Aunt Cat wasn’t crazy.” No, they're moving there, and there they will be homeschooled. Sorry if it's unclear. The story will be about Faerie; therefore, it will be fantasy. This is just the beginning, and it doesn't show the fantasy element. I liked it, but I don't think it's the most original story ever. Obviously, I'm not trying to be a total jerk, I'm just telling you the truth. I think that there's about five thousand other stories with the same exact plot at this one -- the girl moves, the mom thinks the house has tons of memories, then something happens to make them reconsider the move or whatever. It's not the most original, but I liked the description that you added into it. I don't always enjoy authors putting their heart and soul into the verbs and adjectives, but I think you have a great medium with the understandable and almost life-like dialogue, as well as the description of the house and the setting. Hope this helped! :) | Read more |
